Dr. Eleni Panagiotarakou


Chair - Research and Professional Development

Born in Sparta, Greece, Eleni came to Canada and lived with the James Bay Cree (Eeyou Istchee) as part of her geographic fieldwork in urban planning and Native architecture that was funded by the Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs. Her internship as a Policy Analyst at the Department of Justice (Ottawa) explored restorative approaches to criminal justice, and was undertaken at the same time as her PhD in philosophy.

Presently she is a Professor at Champlain College Lennoxville (Humanities), and a part-time Lecturer at Ottawa University (environmental law), Bishop’s University (human rights), and Concordia University in the Departments of Political Science and Philosophy.

An active researcher, her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics, The Ethics Forum, Idealistic Studies, Schole, Logeion, Political Theory, International Philosophical Quarterly, Canadian Journal of Political Science, Polis, and the Canadian Journal of Criminology & Criminal Justice. She has presented her work in over 14 international conferences, including three guest lectures at SUNY (New York), University of Wyoming (UW), and St. Stephen’s College (Oxford University, UK).

Her community outreach activities include op-eds in the Globe & Mail, Jerusalem Post, Courier-Journal, South China Morning Post, Feminist Wire, Hamilton Spectator, National Post, The Gazette, radio interviews and television appearances at CTV News.

In terms of academic service work, she sits on the editorial board of the journal Politeia: International Interdisciplinary Philosophy Review, and is a reviewer for Routledge (Oxfordshire, UK), Rowman & Littlefield (Lanham, USA) and the Journal of the American Philosophical Association (Newark, US).

In terms of committee service work, she served for four years at Concordia’s Academic Hearing Panel as well as the Hellenic Scholarship Foundation (McGill University). Currently she is serving in the Institutional Repository Committee (Bishop’s University), Faculty Liaison Indigenous Reconciliation (Champlain College), and Concordia’s Open Access Committee.

Eleni looks forward to advancing the academic equity of CUPFA members within Concordia; highlighting their achievements to a wider audience, and fostering a culture of professional growth and opportunities for all members to benefit from PD funds in a strategic manner.
